Q & A : Tips to get off stimulants and increase your energy

A friend writes:
Dave,
"I need coffee in the morning. I'm up at 5:45 every morning and I don't go to sleep until between 12- and 1 am. School and work are killing me. Without some type of stimulant in the morning im dead. I'm starting over after everything I've been on for the past 3 weeks. I'm eliminating dairy from my diet...I think it will be the greatest thing I ever do. I'm ready to get focused. Any suggestions?

Danny,
I hear ya man. I have the same problem sometimes at school. Unfortunately though, there is no substitute for sleeping. Stimulants will only put you into an even bigger hole (sleep debt) as your body becomes artificially stimulated and forced to tap into its reserve supplies in order to rid itself of the drug effects of caffeine. If you simply can't sleep more and only have limited energy, you're going to have to be smarter about the ways you use it (i.e. not waste it). Here are a few things you can do that have definitely helped me.

1. Eat foods that are very easy to digest and supply the best quality nutrition (fruits and vegetables). The body uses a tremendous amount of energy in the process of digestion. Eating meats, dairy, and processed foods will waste your energy in digestion and excretion of toxic by products. Less energy in digestion means you will have more energy to think, study, exercise, etc. These foods also obviously supply the best nutrition.

2. Every hour, take a ten minute break in a quiet area and close your eyes. The body uses a lot of energy to process visual and auditory stimulation. Sparing your mind and body of this stimulation for 10 minutes every hour will recharge your batteries and give you a boost of energy. This helps me a lot.

3. Use your weekends wisely. The work week is very draining both physically and mentally. You are in a tough time with school and work right now, and your body NEEDS the recovery time. This may mean you might have to pass on going out. Drinking and staying up late on the weekends, as I'm sure you know, places excess strain on an already overworked system and sets you back big time for the next week ahead. Sleep all you can on the weekends. I usually go to sleep pretty early and don't set an alarm. I usually wake up on my own anywhere from 10-12 hours later. The weekends have literally kept me alive over the past year.

Try these out and see if you can get off of coffee. You're right, getting off dairy will literally be the best thing you ever do.
